GTMO In Chicago

The Chicago police department operates an off-the-books interrogation compound, rendering Americans unable to be found by family or attorneys while locked inside what lawyers say is the domestic equivalent of a CIA black site.

The facility, a nondescript warehouse on Chicago’s west side known as Homan Square, has long been the scene of secretive work by special police units. Interviews with local attorneys and one protester who spent the better part of a day shackled in Homan Square describe operations that deny access to basic constitutional rights.

This is what happens when you don't give a damn about what happens to "other people" - eventually they come for you:

  • First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Socialist.
  • Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
  • Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Jew.
  • Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me.
Martin Niemöller

This could accurately be rephrased in the following manner:

  • First they came for the Blacks, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Black.
  • Then they came for the drug addicts, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a drug addict.
  • Then they came for the Muslims, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Muslim.
  • Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me.
