Reading as a form of protest

During my last period of employment with the environmental agency of a large state, which lasted for ten years, I don't think I met a single coworker who had read a book of substance. At least not one they were willing to talk about. Their minds were shaped by TV, video games, and social networking.

The situation here is kind of like Fahrenheit 451, except it's the people themselves who are destroying all the books; and in the US, there is no one left to put out the fire.
